Hardness and Inapproximability Results for Minimum Verification Set and Minimum Path Decision Tree Problems

چکیده
Minimization of decision trees is a well studied problem. In this work, we introduce two new problems related to minimization of decision trees. The problems are called minimum verification set (MinVS) and minimum path decision tree (MinPathDT) problems. Decision tree problems ask the question “What is the unknown given object?”. MinVS problem on the other hand asks the question “Is the unknown object z?”, for a given object z. Hence it is not an identification, but rather a verification problem. MinPathDT problem aims to construct a decision tree where only the cost of the root-to-leaf path corresponding to a given object is minimized, whereas decision tree problems in general try to minimize the overall cost of decision trees considering all the objects. Therefore, MinVS and MinPathDT are seemingly easier problems. However, in this work we prove that MinVS and MinPathDT problems are both NP-complete and cannot be approximated within a factor in o(lgn) unless P = NP.

Hardness Results and Approximation Algorithms for the Minimum Dominating Tree Problem
Given an undirected graph G = (V,E) and a weight function w : E → R, the Minimum Dominating Tree problem asks to find a minimum weight sub-tree of G, T = (U,F ), such that every v ∈ V \U is adjacent to at least one vertex in U . The special case when the weight function is uniform is known as the Minimum Connected Dominating Set problem. Given an undirected graph G = (V,E) with some subsets of ...
متن کاملOn the Hardness and Inapproximability of Optimization Problems on Power Law Graphs
The discovery of power law distribution in degree sequence (i.e. the number of vertices with degree i is proportional to i−β for some constant β) of many large-scale real networks creates a belief that it may be easier to solve many optimization problems in such networks. Our works focus on the hardness and inapproximability of optimization problems on power law graphs (PLG). In this paper, we ...
متن کاملHardness of Approximating p2 Minimization Problems
We show that a number of natural optimization problems in the second level of the Polynomial Hierarchy are p2-hard to approximate to within n factors, for specific > 0. The main technical tool is the use of explicit dispersers to achieve strong, direct inapproximability results. The problems we consider include Succinct Set Cover, Minimum Equivalent DNF, and other problems relating to DNF minim...
متن کاملA Metaheuristic Algorithm for the Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree Problem
The routing cost of a spanning tree in a weighted and connected graph is defined as the total length of paths between all pairs of vertices. The objective of the minimum routing cost spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree such that its routing cost is minimum. This is an NP-Hard problem that we present a GRASP with path-relinking metaheuristic algorithm for it. GRASP is a multi-start ...
متن کاملHardness of Online Sleeping Combinatorial Optimization Problems
We show that several online combinatorial optimization problems that admit efficient no-regret algorithms become computationally hard in the sleeping setting where a subset of actions becomes unavailable in each round. Specifically, we show that the sleeping versions of these problems are at least as hard as PAC learning DNF expressions, a long standing open problem. We show hardness for the sl...
